Breakfast At Abbey's

A breakfast meeting organised by Mid Beds District Council was hosted by Abbey Corrugated at it's state-of the-art Blunham plant on Tuesday 4 April 2000.

Abbey Corrugated manufactures and supplies corrugated board to case and box makers throughout the UK who convert the board into packaging for almost every conceivable product from foodstuffs to computers.

Forty guests representing major employers were welcomed by Councillor Mrs Fiona Chapman, chairman of the council, to a traditional 'English' cooked breakfast.

'This is how we do things around here' was the theme of a short talk given by Abbey's managing director, Bob McLellan. He said that the company's development with over £30 million of capital investment and a culture of empowering all the workforce, new process developments and harnessing the power of the internet, are all part of the integrated business plan that has made Abbey the UK's leading corrugating sheetfeeding plant.

It is also the largest single site in Europe with four corrugating machines under one roof providing high quality employment for the Bedfordshire area.

In response to questions McLellan expressed the view the manufacturing industry in the UK should be given more credit and recognised as key to a thriving economy where manual and craft skills should be valued.

Councillor Andy Rayment, leader of the council, updated the meeting on the 'cabinet' policy structure and management recently introduced within Mid Beds. It is anticipated this will provide an efficient and democratic decision making process.

The meeting concluded with a brief tour of Abbey's 250,000 square feet plant and the visitors departed before 10 a.m.! - with still time to do a full days work !
