Abbey Sets Industry Standard
Abbey Corrugated has become the first UK Sheetfeeder to achieve ISO 14001 the Environmental Management Systems standard.
"Environmental considerations have always been a high priority at Abbey, said managing director Bob McLellan, "And we view ISO 14001 as a formal endorsement of our long standing policy. During the past few years, over 320 million has been invested in our plant in Bedfordshire to make it the most efficient corrugated board manufacturing plant in the UK, and we have spent a great deal of money to ensure that our waste disposal, dust extraction, and water filtration systems are first class."
"We are in a beautiful rural area alongside the River Ivel and we believe we have a responsibility to play our part in its protection."
But the independent environmental review which was carried out as part of the assessment procedure was not concerned only with pollution control. Waste minimisation, the control of operations, risk assessment and adopting a policy of continuous improvement were major considerations in achieving the standard.
Jo O'Connor, who was part of Abbeys dedicated environmental team, said "Given the other work that had already been done on environmental issues at Abbey, we were confident of achieving the standard quickly. In fact it took less than 10 months.
"For me, 14001 offers reassurance to Abbey people, our customers and the wider community, that we are operating our business in a way which is responsible to the environment."
Significantly, no major changes have been found necessary in environmental practices at Abbey as a result of the independent assessment.
