Abbey Beats The Fuel Crisis

Although some Sheetfeeders were forced to halt deliveries of board to their customers during the fuel crisis, Abbey Corrugateds customers enjoyed business as usual deliveries of corrugated board from its Blunham plant in Bedfordshire.

An Abbey spokesman said that the company had benefited from running its own fleet of vehicles and having its own fuel dump. Abbey artics use 5,000 litres of fuel every 24 hours and its distribution staff worked around the clock keeping stocks up to operating levels.

"Key staff were on call 24 hours a day during the crisis coaxing the last drop of fuel out of suppliers to make sure we could refuel our fleet."

Apart from having its own vehicles and fuel supplies Abbey had the added advantage of strategic fuel dumps nationwide at the depots of its sister company, AAG Distribution.

Even customers in Cornwall, the far North East and Scotland had regular deliveries, although the company had to increase its number of night drivers and sometimes do night drops in order to maintain its service.
