Record Launch In Abbeylite!
Japanese food importers, Tazaki Foods, have chalked up a couple of firsts and
set a product launch record with its new Yo! Sushi home kit pack it produces for the Sainsburys supermarket chain.
Its 'roll your own' sushi is the first complete sushi home kit to be launched in Britain, and it is the first time in its 27 years history that Tazaki has used a corrugated board pack. And, according to Sainsburys, the eight weeks it took from product development to the supermarket's shelves was its fastest ever product launch!
David S Smith Cartons in Neath produced the pack using Abbey Corrugated's latest Abbeylite 'N' flute board and Tazaki's in-house design centre developed the graphics. These called for die-cut 'windows' but, because of the weight of the pack, conventional cartonboard would have creased around the die-cuts and provided insufficient stacking strength and product protection.
Although it is a lightweight board, Abbeylite not only provided the necessary strength it proved an ideal medium for the complex die-cutting operations.
The 'windows' reveal the packs and sachets of nori, wasabi, soy sauce, ginger and rice which are held in position within the pack by glued and free standing die-cut fitments. A cartonboard pack of Japanese horseradish is fitted in the free standing fitment and carries a repeat of the outer pack graphics.
David S Smith Cartons produced the pack and the horseradish sauce carton in four colour process with a special blue and orange, and the free standing fitment in blue only. Window patching is inside the front of pack only with the film pouch of the nori creating its own window effect on the reverse.
"The result has been a first class product in a first class pack said Tony Roe, Tazaki's sales director. "And we are impressed with the performance of the Abbeylite board. It has not only given us a strong pack, its printing surface is indistinguishable from cartonboard."
