Further £3 Million Investment At Abbey

A £3 million investment project which was designed to extend the Abbey Corrugated factory in Bedfordshire by some 7000 square metres has now been completed and will allow Abbey to considerably improve on its existing customer service levels. In addition to the new plant facilities, the investment has provided a new lorry park, a new lorry wash and a bulk pallet storage area.

"The aim is to enable our corrugators to run even more efficiently by improving the flow in the finished goods area, said site operations director Richard Caunt.

"It means that board will be moved less often by fork trucks which in turn will reduce the incidence of damage and loss, and it will also remove the bottle-neck created by work coming off the corrugator."

In addition, information levels are being improved as a result of the new computerised shop floor collection system for the materials handling lines and warehouse which will enable us to know the exact location of every pallet and make the loading of vehicles much more efficient.

It also means that those customers who are now linked to the new Internet EDI system will be able to monitor their orders on screen and check when an order comes off the corrugator, when it is in the warehouse, and when it has been loaded onto a vehicle.

Health and safety always gets a priority at Abbey and the additional space will further improve safety in the factory, added to which, a new heating system is being installed which will not only heat the entire factory and improve working conditions, it will produce a better environment for the board conditioning process which will further reduce the possibility of warp.
