Abbey Helps Romanian Orphans

Blunham based board manufacturers Abbey Corrugated is making a significant contribution to 'Convoy 2000', a Metropolitan Police aid project which is providing much needed supplies for Romania's thousands of orphaned children.

Convoy 2000 was instigated by Sir John Stevens, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, to provide clothing, basic foodstuffs, bedding and toys for the Romanian orphans many of whom were living in appalling conditions.

During a visit to Blunham, Inspector Anthony Moore who heads Convoy 2000 presented a testimonial signed by Sir John to Abbey's managing director, David Coleman as a token of appreciation.

"Without the generous support of sponsors like Abbey, Convoy 2000 would never have got on the road. By providing us with custom made corrugated cases, Abbey has enabled us to pack all the supplies in a much more professional manner. That means that we can stack our loads better, fully optimise the space in our vehicles, have greater security and the goods arrive in near perfect condition.

"This is the second year of the project and our latest convoy of 12 HGV lorries and 4 other vehicles carried 300 tonnes of medical supplies, rice, sugar and pasta together with clothing, some of which was provided by the Trading Standards Agency from confiscated counterfeit goods which otherwise would have been burned. The total value of the goods carried by the convoy was in excess of £385,000.

Some 150 volunteers from the Metropolitan and Essex Police, the Ambulance Service and the RAC have given up holidays to work for Convoy 2000 in Romania. One of the projects they are currently working on is the refurbishment of an old mansion house for elderly people and orphans.

David Coleman said that Abbey would continue in its support of Convoy 2000 and the project had the wholehearted support of the entire workforce at South Mills. "We will continue to look at ways in which our skills and expertise can further help make life a little better for the orphaned children of Romania."
