Abbey Board has launched a programme of ‘Designer Days’ that will be staged at its Kettering plant in Northamptonshire, the first of which is scheduled to take place in March 2005.

Commenting on the announcement John Blackburn, Abbey’s sales and marketing director said, "The past few years have seen some remarkable changes taking place in the manufacture of corrugated board. We hope that these ‘Designer Days’ will encourage a more pragmatic and proactive approach to packaging solutions which could open up a whole new era in board packaging design.

"Many companies claim to be creative and innovative but struggle to turn these assets into a commercial success. An important part of this programme will be to provide the tools to develop a way of achieving a higher conversion rate."

Part of the day will be taken up with presentations and an interactive dialogue headed by David Hope who leads the design group at the D.S.Smith flagship plant at Fordham in Cambridgeshire. And a number of guest speakers with established design track records will also be taking part.

Abbey also intends to stage ‘follow up days’ for directors and senior management which, apart from providing feedback on the effectiveness of the programme, will examine ways in which these tools could be developed further.

Commenting on the launch of the new programme, Abbey customer Noel Curedale of the sheet plant Style Pack said, "This is the sort of initiative that can make a real and positive difference to the sheetplant sector. We have a great pool of talent in our industry that needs to be encouraged and motivated to be creatively adventurous. The boards that are available today give us the opportunity to breathe new life into the board packaging industry and Abbey is to be applauded for leading this drive."

All delegates receive a sample pack of the boards being presented several weeks before the event.
