Accreditation double for Abbey

BOXMART
Abbey Corrugated and Abbey Board have become the first sheetfeeders to achieve approved supplier status to SPA Five Star Accredited companies.

Commenting on the news, Abbey’s managing director Mark Shaw said, “This is the clearest example yet of our total commitment to the Sheet Plant Association and the sheet plant industry and we are delighted to have been able to chalk up yet another first!

“I am firmly convinced that the SPA’s Five Star programme is making a major contribution to the strengthening of the sheetplant sector in the UK; it has done a fantastic job in raising the standards of member companies to ensure they function operationally, ethically and legally and at a standard above that of the rest of the sector.”

The Abbey companies were submitted to the same audits as sheetplants which meant they had to demonstrate their adherence to accepted best practice in five key areas; customer relations, employee relations, health and safety, quality and hygiene and supplier relations.

Alan Davies, Abbey’s SHEQ improvement manager said that already having ISO9000 and 14000 in place, together with Investors in People, simplified some of the requirements, and the changes brought about by the accreditation had already become part of daily life at both plants.

“Abbey has yet again proved its unswerving support for our industry”, said SPA vice chairman Tim Gray.

“Since its introduction, Five Star Accreditation has been adopted by the National Packaging Council making it open to all NPC members, and the uptake amongst SPA members continues at a very encouraging rate. There is little doubt that Five Star Accreditation is now universally regarded as the definitive quality standard within the sheetplant and sheetfeeding sectors of our industry.”

Abbey Board has also achieved BRC/IoP accredited status for food packaging which covers hygiene and quality assurance standards for those companies supplying food packaging to retailers.

“This means that customers now have an in-built assurance that our products meet all the required standards and those standards will be maintained by quality audit updates,” said Alan Davies.

“We have put considerable time and effort into achieving this accreditation which has meant revising some of our shop floor practices and running preparation and awareness courses, but the result reflects our commitment to best practice in all aspects of our business. It also underscores our total commitment to our customers.”
